I won't deny that Afterbirth+ has a pretty bad modding API, but even with all these restrictions people somehow come up with fantastic mods to keep the game fresh! It's been almost an entire year, so here's some of my favorite mods (that aren't already in the game) that I think everyone should have:
Quality of Life / General Fixes:
- Fixed Dirt Sprites (This game is literally playable now)
- Visibullets (Something we never knew we wanted)
- External Item Descriptions (If you think this is cheating but still need some help, use Clear Item Descriptions instead)
- Jumping Ministro (Okay, NOW the game is playable!)
- Shooting Blister (LITERALLY. PLAYABLE.)Download free Times-Roman Regular font, TIMES.TTF Times-Roman Regular ALLTYPE:Times-Roman Regular:MIKE Char map Ascii Times-Roman Regular fontChar map Unicode Times-Roman Regular font1. ALLTYPE:Times-Roman Regular:MIKE 4. Times-Roman 2. Helvetica new roman font free download. Times-Roman 5.
- Lilium Dimension (WARNING: Very graphically intensive. Will lag a lot on weaker PCs)
- Child's Play (This is actually a trinket now)
Misc / Character Mods:
Currently rocking the game with all these mods installed and misc mods disabled. Lemme tell ya, it's a whole other experience.

In January, Edmund McMillen's hit game The Binding of Isaac got its latest expansion. Titled 'Afterbirth+', the DLC added a ton of new content to the game, including items, bosses, and even a new final floor. But perhaps its biggest contribution was official mod support. Opening the floodgates of the Steam Workshop for fans to mod whatever they wanted into the game was sure to come with some issues, and sure enough, modding in Isaac, while fun, is not without risk.
One bug, in particular, seems to be fairly common -- and devastating. When you go to the mod menu, disable the mods, and back out, the game abruptly crashes. When you try to re-open it, it crashes again on startup. Reinstalling the game does nothing. Does this mean you're locked out of the game forever? Deep breaths-- I had this issue, and after hours of Googling, trial, and error, I was able to find a solution.

Why Does This Bug Happen?
As a disclaimer, I am not an expert on the inner workings of Isaac. As such, this part of the analysis is my best guess on the bug's cause. The bug seems to most commonly occur with mods of a large size,
The bug seems to most commonly occur with mods of a large size, especially those that add new characters. (In fact, character mods specifically could be the culprit.) Adding these mods creates some sort of a dependency in the game's logic -- it thinks it needs those mods present to run at all, and when it doesn't find them, it just gives up. So How Do You Fix It?
Best Afterbirth+ Mods
There are a few steps here, depending on when your crash occurred.
- If you uninstalled the mods in question, you'll want to redownload them. Head to the Steam Workshop and take care of that.
- The next step is to re-enable the mods. Obviously, you can't do so in-game because you can't get past the startup screen, but there is another way. Go to Documents/My Games and look for the 'Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ Mods' folder. Delete it.
- Now relaunch the game. With the mods folder missing, the game will automatically redownload it, and will by default enable all of the mods. With the dependencies satisfied, the game shouldn't crash.
- Finally, it's time to disable the mods for real this time. Before doing so, though, start a run as Isaac and die. Just enter the nearest room and run into enemies until your health is depleted. Supposedly, this resets the dependency, making it safe at last to disable the mods.
- While disabling the mods, I recommend doing so one at a time (enter the menu, turn one off, and back out), just to be safe. The game may still crash here, but it should relaunch without further issue.
Hopefully, this short guide to The Binding of Isaac game crashing bug will be enough to get you back up and running -- and keep you from losing any progress in the game after you've installed any mods.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is an expansion to the Rebirth remake that shares a name with previous expansion and oh gosh why is this so complicated.
If you’re a big fan of The Binding of Isaac, you don’t need to read this article – you already know what you need to. Afterbirth+ is out on Steam. Go get it, tiger – if you own Afterbirth, it’s 33% off until January 10. Look for it on consoles in northern spring.
If you’re only sort of tangentially aware of the whole The Binding of Isaac thing, now is a really good time to get on board: Afterbirth+ is the final, definitive version of a game with a complicated history.

As Edmund McMillen wrote on The Binding of Isaac blog, Afterbirth+ will “close the book on a five year journey”. During this time, The Binding of Isaac has transformed from a free Flash project to a commercial release, got a DLC expansion called Wrath of the Lamb, was remade as The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, and received another expansion pack called Afterbirth.
Now here comes Afterbirth+, and you need both The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and the Afterbirth expansion to play it. Afterbirth+ adds new items, enemies, unlockables, achievements, endings and an extra playable character, but what makes it extra special is it also adds mod tools and supports user-made mods.
Although this is officially the end of The Binding of Isaac development (McMillen may weaken and come back), there will be new content. The best mods will be rounded up and released for free as monthly “Booster Packs”, which will make them officially part of the game. That means Booster pack content is compatible with unlocking in-game content and achievements, which is normally a no-no with mods.
So it’s both the end and the beginning of the story of The Binding of Isaac, and that makes it a pretty good time to check it out, I reckon. Now cross your fingers McMillen goes back to Team Meat and cracks on with Mew-Genics already.
